We were interviewed about our studio, The Bottle Garden, on CBC Montreal show Cinq à Six with Jeannette Kelly in March. We rambled about analog recording, building the studio, and gossiped about bands who’ve passed through. We played some of our own music, as well as some artists who’ve recorded in the Bottle Garden (we couldn’t play them all, unfortunately!) , including Lantern, Sheer Agony, TOPS, Jef Barbara, Moss Lime, and Exit Someone. We also got to play ‘Song For Insane Times’ by Kevin Ayers, as an example of one of our favourite recordings.
You can listen to the whole interview in the archives here.
There’s also a short web writeup here.
We in Freelove Fenner would like to extend a belated thank you to the following people/institutions that placed us on 2012 year-end lists:
Our cover of Chevalier Avant Garde’s ‘Mint’ made #52 on Said the Gramophone’s Top 100 Songs of 2012.
Pineapple Hair made #29 on CKUT 90.3FM’s top 100 most-played of 2012 list.
Pineapple Hair also made #28 on cross-town friendly rivals CJLO 160AM’s annual airplay chart.
Ghettoblaster magazine invited some artists to contribute year-end lists. Pineapple Hair was graciously included on San Fran artist, Jen Schande’s top 10 of 2012 list. Here’s what she had to say:
“Freelove Fenner – Pineapple Hair E.P. – Fixture Records
One of the best cassette tapes that has come may way in a long time. Worry not, they are bandcamp too, so you can hear their greatness if you are sans cassette player. My friend/bandmate Jim sent me a link to this band and I say thank you kind sir for that. They are slightly more poppy than what I usually listen to, but I really love what they’re doing. It’s stripped down ‘90s indie, with a pop bent, with really subtle psychedelic influence and the main vocals remind me of Amy Linton, which is a very, very, very good thing. The last release this band put out was in 2009, so I hope I don’t have to wait until 2015 to see what they do next.” -Hey thanks, we really like the Aislers Set.
One of our fav Japanese music bloggers, Forgotten Hall, ranked Pineapple Hair #6 on her list of best albums/EPs of 2012.
UK music site Shout4Music ranked us #10 on their Ones to Watch 2013 list.
Excellent Ottawa DJ Rocky LaLune of CKCU FM put Pineapple Hair on her year-end best of list.
Not a list per-se, but Melody Prochet (Melody’s Echo Chamber) mentioned Pinapple Hair in her response to ‘which albums have you been listening to on the regular in 2012?’ here. We incidentally really dig her album as well.
Mr. Catholic Discipline asked us to send in a list of The Sounds That Shaped Us for his sshhoobbmmxxbblloogg…..
What was meant to be a list of “about 10” songs or albums, we just barely whittled down (with plenty emotionally-fuelled sparring) to a Top 40. Syd Barrett, Beatles, MBV, White Noise…….

“I’ve had this song stuck in the periphery of my mind since first hearing it a couple of weeks back. Hailing from Montréal, all their songs have great melodies, early 90’s lo-fi beauty, and this absolutely cool ‘devil-may-care’ attitude to them. Their soundcloud is worth checking out. I just want to live in the world where the music they make is the soundtrack.” http://wunderfemme.tumblr.com

…review of In the Bottle Garden by Matt Lee for The Big Takeover…
The tones and colors of In the Bottle Garden are finely spun, whittled down to the barest interplay of pure unadorned melody. By avoiding the use of effects, Freelove Fenner manages to paint intricate and finely crafted vignettes that last in the mind and compel repeated listens. In the Bottle Garden is a creeper… a dark alleyway of an album that evokes and engages through understated and creative songwriting.
